Sub-Doppler cooling of neutral atoms in a grating magneto-optical trap
نویسندگان
چکیده
The grating magneto-optical trap (GMOT) requires only one beam and three planar diffraction gratings to form a cloud of cold atoms above the plane of the diffractors. Despite the complicated polarization arrangement, we demonstrate sub-Doppler cooling of 87Rb atoms to a temperature of 7.6 0.6 μK through amultistage, far-detunedGMOT in conjunction with optical molasses. A decomposition of the electric field into polarization components for this geometry does not yield a mapping onto standard sub-Doppler laser-cooling configurations. With numerical simulations, we find that the polarization composition of the GMOT optical field, which includes σ and π polarized light, does produce sub-Doppler temperatures. © 2013 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (020.1335) Atom optics; (140.3320) Laser cooling. http://dx.doi.org/10.1364/JOSAB.30.002869

Magneto-optical trapping of holmium atoms
We demonstrate sub-Doppler laser cooling and magneto-optical trapping of the rare-earth element holmium. Atoms are loaded from an atomic beam source and captured in six-beam σ+ − σ− molasses using a strong J = 15/2 ↔ J = 17/2 cycling transition at λ = 410.5 nm. Due to the small difference in hyperfine splittings and Landé g factors in the lower and upper levels of the cooling transition the MOT...
متن کاملSub-Doppler laser cooling of 40K with Raman gray molasses on the D2 line
Gray molasses is a powerful tool for sub-Doppler laser cooling of atoms to low temperatures. For alkaline atoms, this technique is commonly implemented with cooling lasers which are blue-detuned from either the D1 or D2 line. Here we show that efficient gray molasses can be implemented on the D2 line of K with red-detuned lasers. We obtained temperatures of m ( ) 48 2 K, which enables direct lo...
متن کاملCooling and Trapping of Atomic Strontium
We present a detailed investigation of strontium magneto-optical trap (MOT) dynamics. Relevant physical quantities in the trap, such as temperature, atom number and density, and loss channels and lifetime, are explored with respect to various trap parameters. By studying the oscillatory response of a two-level 1 S 0 – 1 P 1 88 Sr MOT, we firmly establish the laser cooling dynamics predicted by ...
متن کاملRaman-induced magnetic resonance imaging of atoms in a magneto-optical trap
Precision position measurement and localization of atoms in beams and in traps have diverse applications in atom optics. These range from direct-writing neutral atom nanolithography @1# to new fundamental studies of quantum correlations in ultracold, dilute samples of bosons or fermions @2–6#. Further, textbook examples of quantum measurement are enabled by position-dependent atom-field couplin...
متن کاملPhase-space properties of magneto-optical traps utilising micro-fabricated gratings.
We have used diffraction gratings to simplify the fabrication, and dramatically increase the atomic collection efficiency, of magneto-optical traps using micro-fabricated optics. The atom number enhancement was mainly due to the increased beam capture volume, afforded by the large area (4cm(2)) shallow etch (~ 200nm) binary grating chips. Here we provide a detailed theoretical and experimental ...
